150 EFI Boat Motor Seized?
I had a 96 merc 150 efi and I was out on the lake and my engine suddenly died then when I went to try to turn it over it would not turn. I think that the oil pump may have gone out in the motor and that caused it to seize. The temp guage did not read hot and the water pump was reading around 25 psi. Is there anywy to break it free or am I doomed to a rebuild?
Did it stop suddenly, or slowly die? Cough, sputter or just stop all at once? You said suddenly, so I presume it just immediately quit which could point to seizing. Ouch. Oil related seizure is more of a problem than heat related since without lube, the cylinders score pretty fast. Sometimes with heat only, after cooling, you can turn the motor over with some oil in the cylinders and avoid any significant damage.
Two choices in my own book. Take it in to a mechanic and get his opinion. If it's oil failure and you break it free, you still have to diagnose and fix the failure anyhow. Second choice is to dose the cylinders with some oil and use a socket and long bar to try and tun the engine over by the flywheel. That could break it free. But again, that only loosens the cylinders and you don't know what damage you have inside or why the pump quit if that's what happened. That would only ley you know that itmight be salvagable as far as not needing more than posible rings and a honing, if that.
Good luck.
